handcrafted soaps and the benefits of them
Living healthier isn’t a fad or a trend it is simply a way of life. It seems that more and more when you take the time to read the ingredients contained in your food, drink or skin products you need to be a chemist to truly know what you are eating drinking or covering yourself with. After having dealt with eczema with my husband and daughter we began reading the ingredients on the soaps we were using only to be shocked by what we found. Things like Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Lauroyl Isethionate, and Sodium Cocoaten which can irritate skin were often contained in the soaps we were using. It was at this point we decided to look for an alternative and began reviewing some of the traditional hand-made methods for making soap.
Once we began making and using our own goats milk soap it was clear we wouldn’t be relying on modern chemistry or commercially produced soaps any longer.
The benefits to using goat milk soap are numerous. Goat milk is known to contain over 50 vitamins and minerals that nourish and revitalize dry skin. Goat milk soap is known to have a PH level very close to your own skin and more fat than goats milk. You will notice that the goat milk soap bars are not hard to the touch, but rather smooth and silky, this is due to its rich emollient properties and lack of drying detergents that are found in store bought soap. Goat milk also contains the emollient capric triglyceride, otherwise known as glycerin. Typically during the commercial process of soap making the manufacturer separates the glycerin from the soap through the addition of salts to allow for the capture of the beneficial glycerin. Hand made soaps leave the glycerin in soap providing wonderful moisturizing benefits. Goat milk soap specifically penetrates your skin providing additional moisture for your skin. Additionally, the lactic acid contained in the Goats milk is said to work as an exfoliant.
Beyond these benefits, it is believed that the natural proteins contained within the goat milk kill the bacteria that cause acne. The natural ingredients are also beneficial to people that have skin sensitivities such as eczema (as described above). Here at Little Hands Farm we use our own fresh goats milk and when available (depending on the season) we add our own fresh herbs, flowers, beeswax and honey. All our soaps are handcrafted in small batches here on our farm with no two bars being exactly the same.
Please check back frequently as new soap scents and varieties are being created weekly! We hope you enjoy them as much as we do!
